Free Stuff

Starving Students, like I was for many years, prove how innovative human beings can be.  Limited budgets force creative thinking and we look for free stuff, free software, free food, free anything we can get our hands on!  Here is a list of free software that you can download to help you through high school and college studies in STEM.  This is not an exhaustive list, so please contact me with other free software pertinent to STEM and I’ll include it here.

Mechanical / Architectural

  • The heavy hitter AutoCAD offers 2D and 3D software for students and faculty
  • 3D computer aided design:  onshape and sketchup

Software / Computer Science

  • Truely free compiler:  C-free by cnet
  • Scientific computing with Anaconda (includes Python in the distribution)
  • C and C++ compiler for ARM Cortex microcontrollers:  Keil uVision

Electrical Engineering

  • OrCAD PSPICE Lite Simulation (student version):  PSPICE Lite
  • Printed Circuit Board layout tool:  EAGLE CAD
  • Linear Technology’s SPICE circuit simulator:  LTSPICE
  • Texas Instruments’ SPICE circuit simulator:  Tina TI

Mathematics

  • PTC Mathcad Lite version:  PTC Mathcad  (MS Windows only) 
  • Project Maxima:  Maxima
  • Scilab Open source software for numerical computation:  Scilab
