Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS) are ubiquitous today. If you own a smart phone, you have several MEMS sensors at your fingertips. When I designed this development board, I wanted to create an educational platform that would teach the following concepts used by electrical engineers and computer scientists today:

  • MEMS sensor technology
  • 3-axis accelerometer with I2C interface
  • 3-axis magnetometer with I2C interface
  • 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer with I2C interface
  • 8-bit PIC16F1829 Microcontroller
  • UART for interfacing with a computer
  • High brightness LED output driver
  • Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) boost converter basics
  • DC Motor control output
  • 256k EEPROM with SPI interface
  • C programming methods and data structures
  • Interrupt service routine (ISR)
  • Powered by a single Lithium Ion battery
